I grew up in Flushing, Michigan, during the 1960′s and 70′s listening to Todd Rundgren, playing in open fields and woods, hunting small game, riding motorcycles and snowmobiles, and not liking school enough to pay attention. After dropping out of college I found a job as an autoworker. I drank my way through that career, two marriages and several opportunities to take different paths – both good and bad. When the path I was on got bad enough, I decided to do something about it.
At the age of 43, I got into recovery and a few years later decided to go back to school. I double majored in Human Services and Writing at Lansing Community College, finishing up in 2009. While back in school, I did an internship with a psychologist who specializes in addiction treatment. I enjoyed counseling but found writing to be my true passion. Deciding I could potentially help more people by writing, I began putting together the things I had learned in recovery. Becoming Normal: An Ever-Changing Perspective is the result, and my first book.
I have been in recovery for nine years. My next book, with the working title Fear: It’s Just Part of the Process, is in the editing stage with my publisher, Central Recovery Press. I am currently working on a thought for the day book, which is as yet untitled.
