Nancy L. Johnston is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner in private practice in Virginia. She has a B.S. in Psychology from the College of William and Mary and a M.S. in Counseling Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University.
With 34 years of clinical experience, she has developed these Disentangle ideas from both her professional and personal experiences, blending counseling theory and techniques with twelve-step wisdom. Always having worked in the worlds of both mental health and addictions, Nancy specializes in treating adolescents and adults. She works with a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues, and she has always had a special interest in addictions and their effects on both individuals and family systems.
Nancy has worked in public and private psychiatric hospitals, juvenile corrections, public mental health, and colleges. She has been in private practice since 1992.
Nancy’s work with Disentangle began in the mid-1990’s as a direct extension of work she was doing with clients. The project started as a list in response to a client’s question. It grew into a three-page handout used by individuals and groups, and then it became a book.
As the book has evolved, Nancy has had the opportunity to present this material at many places including the Cape Cod Symposium on Addictive Disorders, the Addictions: Focus on Women Conference (AFOW), the Carolinas’ Conference on Addiction and Recovery, the Virginia Summer Institute on Addiction Studies, the Virginia Counselors’ Association Annual Conference, and regional EAPA conferences.
Additionally, Nancy does one-day workshops on Disentangle and twice-a-year offers Codependence Camp with a valued colleague and friend.
Nancy lives with her husband and daughter in an old house on a river in the Valley of Virginia.
